In response to this question, I think it is. How many times a day do you ever wonder about something and then just Google it only to happen upon a website with dubious credentials or a wiki page? We have probably written term papers and formulated a thesis by just Googling.
Socrates bemoaned the development of writing. He feared that, as people came to rely on the written word as a substitute for the knowledge they used to carry inside their heads, they would, in the words of one of the dialogue’s characters, “cease to exercise their memory and become forgetful.” And because they would be able to “receive a quantity of information without proper instruction,” they would “be thought very knowledgeable when they are for the most part quite ignorant.”
When you look at this from a religious perspective, the world's three major religions all believe that they have received their divine revelation from God. However, the holy books weren't exactly multiplied through a written process. They were first inculcated into the minds and hearts of the various believers through recitation and memorization.
